The Royal Palaces of Hua Hin
The Hua Hin palaces tell the story of how this quiet fishing town became Thailand’s original royal seaside retreat, from the graceful teak pavilions of Maruekhathaiyawan to the working royal residence of Klai Kangwon.
Maruekhathaiyawan Palace
Built as a seaside residence for King Rama VI, Maruekhathaiyawan Palace is an elegant complex of golden teak pavilions raised on stilts and linked by long, breezy covered walkways that lead toward the sea. Its airy halls, tall shuttered windows and pastel tones make it one of the most photogenic historic sites in the region. The palace is open to visitors for a modest fee, and modest dress is required out of respect. Allow an hour or two to wander the walkways and gardens. Klai Kangwon Palace
Klai Kangwon Palace, whose name translates roughly as Far From Worries, is a working royal residence just north of central Hua Hin. Because it remains in active royal use, it is admired from the outside rather than toured within, but its seaside setting and Spanish-influenced architecture are still worth seeing as you pass along the coast. It is a reminder of the royal patronage that shaped Hua Hin into a genteel resort town more than a century ago.
Planning your visit
Both palaces lie north of Bayside 19 toward Cha-am, so it makes sense to see them together on a half-day outing. Bring light, respectful clothing that covers shoulders and knees for Maruekhathaiyawan, and remember that opening days, hours and entry fees can change, so check current hours and prices before you visit. A morning at the palaces pairs naturally with an afternoon exploring further afield. Consider heading south another day to Sam Roi Yot National Park for its caves and viewpoints, or up Khao Takiab for hilltop sea views. Together they give you a rich sense of Hua Hin beyond the beach.
Getting there from Bayside 19
Klai Kangwon is about 3 km north of Soi Hua Hin 19, just a few minutes away, while Maruekhathaiyawan is around 10 km north toward Cha-am, roughly a 15 to 20 minute drive. A Grab or hired car makes it easy to see both from the villas in one trip.
